Ladakh
Ladakh – also called little Tibet Bordered by imposing- covered Himalayan peaks like Nun- Kun (over 23000 ft)
and Tibetan desert plateau- the land of rocky landscape, high altitude passes and scintillating lakes, 9th Century
monasteries or Gompas as known in local Parlance is a completely different but interesting world. It was opened
for tourism in the year 1974 and has been attracting worldwide attention for mountaineering and trekking, white
water rafting on the Indus and Zanskar Rivers. A large number of domestic and foreign tourist visit Ladakh during
its short season of June/ July to September. Ladakh Srinagar and Ladakh- manali roads (the only means of access
by land) remain closed due to heavy snowfall on higher passes from October to May and the only outside connectivity
remains through Air Services.
Ladakh has three main regions via Leh, Zanskar, Kargil and Suru Valley. There is a lot to explore in and around
these areas and we briefly give a description of some of them.

LEH PALACE
this 16th Century construction was home of Buddhist king of Ladakh.

NAMGYAL TSEMO GOMPA
the 15th century construction Gompa houses a three storey high Lord Buddha.

SANKAR GOMPA
This has an impressive representative of the Buddhist deity of Compassion.

SHANTI STUPA
this Buddhist religious Monument (stupa) built by Japanese was opened by His Highness
Dalai Lama in 1985. It dazzles, when lit up at night.

THE ECOLOGY CENTRE
this 1983 founded centre promotes ecological and sustainable development, use of renewable
energy in harmony with traditional Culture. The centre also imparts environment and health
education and promotes Handicrafts produced by village artisans and craft persons.

THIKSEY GOMPA
It is one of the best known and recognized monasteries in Ladakh.

HEMIS GOMPA
one of the most famous, accessible and visited Gompas located in the Beautiful Hemis village

RANGDUM GOMPA
located at 12000 ft in an awe inspiring valley.
Some other places of interest are Mulbekh, sending Gompa, Grandest Gompa, Tiksi Gompa, Likir Gompa, spituk Gompa,
Nubra valley, Chamba Gompa, Shargol Gompa, Saru Valley having a panaromic view of ever snow capped Nun-Kun peaks,
Pangong Lake, Choglan sar etc.

Agents. Since, Ladakh is a High Altitude Low Oxygen Region, It is suggested to make proper arrangements, carry
heavy woolens and acclimatize to the high altitude conditions.
